This is still the most common method. The surgeon will make a small incision (cut) above the hernia in your groin. They will then work from the outside-in to repair the hernia. Closing the incision with sutures or skin glue.
The device is used in open surgery to perform a "tension free" repair of certain types of inguinal hernia. It is a permanent synthetic implant that will stay in your body forever, so you must choose carefully after consulting with your doctor if this is the right choice for you. There are alternatives to flat mesh and your physician will help you to choose the right procedure and implant based upon your particular needs.
Flat meshes are designed to simply cover over or go under the hernia defect
The key difference is that the 3 D Mesh implant is built like a "spring" in that it can compress and spring back. This allows the surgeon to place the implant into the hernia hole in a collapsed size, before the implant springs open and wedges inside the hole. By doing this the implant self grips, and that means the surgeon does not always need to stitch the implant in place. It is thought that the stitches holding the implant in place are a potential source of post operative pain. 3 D Mesh does not require those stitches.
To place the 3 D Mesh implant, the surgeon does not always need to make a big space on top of the hernia to place a flat mesh. This means that they reduce the risk of damaging the sensitive nerves that lie in that area of the groin. Those nerves have been associated with post operative pain.
The clinical results to date with ProFlor have shown very low levels of pain post operatively and after more than one year following the operation.
The 2 D Mesh is placed using a very common open hernia procedure. The surgeon would make a 2 inch (5cm) incision above the hernia. As in all open procedure, they would dissect out the hernia sac . When the sac is free they would return it to the abdomen,
When the space is prepared, they would load the 2 D Mesh into the hernia hole. The flat 2 D mesh will cover all the posterior inguinal canal and then the abdominal wall closed above the implant.
The surgery can be performed under general, local or regional anesthesia by a trained doctor in about 30 minutes. Many patients can go home a few hours after the procedure.
Complications with the 2 D Mesh have been studied and shown to be very rare. Common problems such as swelling, fluid collection, bruising are similar to any operation that is performed in the groin for hernia.
Studies conducted so far have shown that after surgery pain has been very low. You would be given normal pain medications for the first week or two after surgery.
Your physician will recommend the course of recovery, and in the first few days after surgery you should not be lifting or straining to avoid dislodging the implant or causing yourself excessive pain. But you should be able to return to normal activity within a few weeks.
If you have excessive pain, swelling, discomfort or other problems that may indicate infection - you should see your physician immediately.
No one implant is right for everybody. This will depend on your clinical condition, type of inguinal,or other hernias mentioned above hernia, health status and needs.
