Frequently asked Questions

Well here few of the frequently asked questions are answered by us, however there may be specific questions you would like to ask to clarify things. We are happy to help you out. Please send your querries to | herniaclinik@gmail.com and we will analyse it for you before answering.

Q: Doctor, what is Hernia?
A:

Hernia is a protrusion of the internal cover of the intestines through the normal opening in the wall of abdomen that has gone abnormal. This cover is peritoneum usually and called as sac of hernia. Basically this is the term-Herniation. This means that when any natural opening in the walls of abdomen gets unusually bigger or enlarged then our body tries to stuff it with available organs in that vicinity,, it may be intestine, fat, organs. So this visceral organ comes out with the covering of peritoneum and it is called as hernia.

Q: What is the treatment of hernia?
A: [FAQ Answer] There is only one treatment that is available and that is SURGERY.

Q: Are there any medicines / tablets/ ointments to cover hernia without surgery?

A: NO, the problem of hernia can not be treated with medicines. It can only be treated with surgery.

Q: When can I do Hernia Surgery? I have just recently developed Hernia.

A: As a hernia surgeon , I advice you to get your hernia surgery done as soon as possible. There is no waiting period for hernia.Whenever you get diagnosed with the hernia ; you should immediately opt for surgery. The hernia gets bigger in size day by day.

Q: At what stage should I repair my Hernia?

A: There is no stage when you should get your hernia repaired. As you know it, you have to do it.

Q: My family doctor says: You can repair your hernia when you have pain or any problem. Is it so?

A: See, hernia is a bomb in your wallet. You are carrying a bomb in your pocket, because you never know in advance that when it will get obstructed or strangulated. So this policy by your family physician is wrong. Infact , I would say: Don't wait for the symptoms and problems of hernia to occur. When they will occur , you will have torush to nearest hospital to save your life. So don't take chances with your precious life.As long as you wait to delay surgery , your hernia gets bigger. Body tries to stuff more loops of intestines and organs in the hole / defect of hernia. So in all the chances of the obstructions in those intestines get large.

Q:What are the symptoms of Hernia?

A: Initially you will feel a bulge at any offending site of hernia like an umbilicus, inguinal region, epigastric region. You feel mild to moderate pain in the initial stages of hernia. Later on when hernia gets bigger , the pain vanishes. There is also a typical sensation of Dragging pain near the site of the hernia. This occurs because there is a drag/pull on the contents of the hernia and the visceral peritoneum is the one who makes this sensation. The swelling at the initial stage will reduce or vanish when you lie down and reappears on standing position. When the hernia gets bigger the contents of the sac of hernia becomes adherent to the inside of the sac and they stop going back into the abdominal cavity. So the hernia does not reduce on lying down or on forceful manipulation. The hernia remains outside whatever you do.

Q: Doctor my age is above 70 years , can I have hernia surgery?

A: Why not? any person who has hernia is eligible for surgery. Only if he/she is not eligible to have anesthesia then the case is different.

Q: Doctor my child in 1 month old and has a hernia . What should I do? Should I wait for the surgery for few years?

A: See pediatric hernias are very important and dangerous too. They should never be ignored. Hernias in children of any age should be repaired immediately. Best policy is not to wait for problems to occur.

Q: Doctor, does hernia affect erection and sexual performance?

A: YES, the answer is affirmative. The reason is , if the hernia is big, small, painful and offending then the erection is suffered due to pain pathway in our body. This ultimately reduced sexual performance too.

Q:Hernia during pregnancy , what to do?

A: hernias in the pregnancy should be examined by a surgeon first. Best policy is to avoid hernia surgery during pregnancy. Once the delivery is over , you can repair the hernia after 9-12 weeks after it.

Q:Doctor, Hernia doesn't hurt me at all . Should I have to do hernia surgery?

A: YES ( affirmative ) You should get your hernia repaired as soon as possible. Day by day it gets bigger and the hole| defect of hernia gets bigger. The strength of the muscles around the defect gets reduced and the chances of the successful hernia repair gets less. Small hernias have excellent success rates as they have been repaired very early. Larger hernias have high chance of recurrence as they are present in that person's body for long time. They make the surrounding muscles very weak and thereby reduce the chances of approximation of the muscles during surgery. This has a bad effect on the outcome of the surgery where they get high chances of the recurrence.

Q: Doctor, Is it dangerous to ignore hernia?

A: Well IT IS ! Hernias those are ignored by the people by fear of surgery or fear of society , or by embarrassment gets bigger in due course of time. The contents of the sac of hernia becomes fixed to the sac. They are non-reducible hernias. They affect the persons emotional and practical life. Walking may become a major task with huge hernia. some times when the hernia gets too big the chances of the obstruction and strangulation become very high. This is a medical emergency and you may have to rush to the hospital in the midnight to save your life. The blood supply of the intstines may be severed die to pressure from the ring of the hernia. There is a chance of gangrene of the intestines. So the idea to ignore hernia , can qiute prove FATAL.

Q:What is strangulated Hernia?

A: It is a medical emergency when the blood supply of the intestines is cut off by the pressure of the ring of the hernia. The intestines may get gangrene before loss of life. So this needs to be done on emergency basis to save lives. Any hernia patient should not wait to see this occur.

Q: I have a recurrent hernia. Is there any permanent solution?

A: Well this is very difficult question. Most people claim to have no recurrence after surgery. But by nature hernia is the bad gift to human by it's standing posture. So we bring up new techniques to reduce the rate of recurrence down to 1-2%. here at herniaclinik we do surgery aiming to reduce the rate of recurrence. We are thus able to reduce it to less than 2% in last 6 years. This is near ideal.

Q: Doctor, does hernia run in families? means is it hereditary?

A: YES , in few families it is seen to run in families. There is high chance that you may belong to such families in the world.

A: We do surgery on patients coming to us from various countries. We promote medical tourism. We take proper care of the persons coming to us. In India prices of hernia surgery are still very low compared to various western countries. So people are well benefited from us in case of prices.
